Biden-Harris Administration Approves Sixth Offshore Wind Farm

PARTAGER

Joint project between BP and Equinor off the coast of New York and New Jersey.

The Biden administration has approved the Empire Wind offshore wind project, a joint venture between the oil and gas companies BP and Equinor off the coast of New York and New Jersey. According to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), an agency within the Department of the Interior, the project is expected to generate up to 2,076 megawatts of energy with its combined 147 wind turbines annually, enough to power more than 700,000 homes. The first of two halves of the facility is set to start operating in 2026.

The project marks the sixth offshore wind farm greenlit under the Biden-Harris administration. Early during his term, President Joe Biden announced the goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power in the U.S. by 2030 as part of his Investing in America agenda.

BP and Equinor also partner on a second wind energy project in the U.S., Beacon Wind, located off the coast of Nantucket. Beacon Wind is currently awaiting approval and is set to deliver 1,230 megawatts of energy.
