Neckarsulm to become competence center for high-voltage batteries.
Car manufacturer Audi plans to phase out the production of vehicles with combustion engines by 2033. To achieve this, the Group is successively preparing its sites and employees for electromobility. By 2023, Neckarsulm will be home to a research center for high-voltage batteries, a component that Audi Board Member for Development Oliver Hoffmann describes in a Communiqué de presse as crucial to competitiveness.
Prototypes for various e-vehicles will be tested in this battery technology center, the company said. This is a clear commitment to the location and offers a future-proof perspective for the employees, even after the end of the combustion engine, he said. The employees, who were previously employed at the test center for conventional drives, have been specially trained for the new tasks.
The level of demand for new e-cars was recently communicated by the National Platform for the Future of Mobility (nous avons rapporté). The body, which advises the German government, sees a need for 14 million vehicles by 2030. Currently, the figure is 309,000 pure e-cars.
